Current Obsessions: New Balance Minimus Trail Shoe!

Hey Sole Foodies, it's Anilyn. I'm super excited to report that our store now carries the NEW New Balance Minimus Trail shoe for both men and women. It is the newest line of barefoot footwear from New Balance. The trail shoe features a rubber wrapped upper designed to reinforce the metatarsal, a stitched tongue to prevent debris from invading your twinkle toes, a wrapped toe to guard against rocks, and an outsole designed to allow the runner to feel the ground without compromising stability.

Now, not every runner is going to need this type of shoe. The NB Minimus is designed so that runners can strike the ground landing at midfoot. It's best to introduce yourself to the sensation of wearing a shoe like this a little at a time. New Balance recommends that first time wearers do only 10% of their usual running/walking routine to help ease runners into the transition.

My priorities are simple: I want to look and feel comfortable, at work and at play. I have had these shoes for a little over three weeks now and I run in them constantly. I took it slow at first but now I'm racing at full sprint. I also love the coral color and it’s totally on trend right now! Come and test them out for yourself and see what all the hype is about.

TEVA has always been ecologically conscious about water and how the world is affected by it. Their adventurous heritage has been around for over 25 years with the mission "to play and to protect". While constantly pushing themselves to design the greatest sport sandals, they also play a vital role in being enviromentally friendly.

We love TEVA because they go above and beyond footwear. Check out the video above and learn about Lucky, a penguin at the Santa Barbara zoo that needed corrective footwear to save its life. We gotta say, TEVA makes an awfully adorable shoe for penguins!

Soles4Souls: A Big Success!

We had a spectacular event this past weekend! Thanks to you we were able to collect over 80 pairs of shoes, and more are still coming in. That is well over our initial goal of 50 pairs. Good job team!

[We have filled three large shipping boxes full of donated shoes. Whoo!]

All of these shoes will be shipped out for repair and processing to Soles4Souls main distribution center in Alabama. From there your donated shoes will be shipped all over the world to help those in need.

Soles4Souls has a pretty big goal this year: to collect 11 million pairs in 2011.

From the Soles4Souls website:
“We have distributed 12 million pairs of shoes in just over 6 years. That gives a little perspective on how audacious our goal of 11 million pairs of shoes in one year really is,” said Elsey. “But with earthquakes like Haiti and Chile, on top of the enormous needs elsewhere, we really believe that our partners are going to rise to the challenge,” he added.

Way to go Sole Foodies! And remember, we take donations for Soles4Souls year round. If you need to clean out your shoe closets, you can always bring your shoes to Sole Food!

One Day Without Shoes

Toms Shoes' 4th annual "One Day Without Shoes" initiative, taking place today, encourages participants to go barefoot everywhere.

From Audrey Goodson at Footwear Plus:

Last year over 250,000 people went without shoes at more than 1,600 events around the world, the company reports. Mycoskie hopes this year's increased publicity will encourage a million people to chuck their footwear for the day. In addition to the revamped message, the company is hosting a new walk in New York, lead by supermodel Anne-V, and also released a One Day Without Shoes mobile app for iPhone and Droid, which enables users to share pictures instantaneously, provides soundtracks for barefoot adventures and includes an array of Toms and One Day Without Shoes merchandise.

"One Day Without Shoes is important for us to raise awareness of the impact a simple pair of shoes can have on a child's life," Mycoskie says. "Millions of children walk barefoot for miles risking injury, infection and exposure to soil-transmitted diseases."

Here at Sole Food, we are asked many different questions from all kinds of customers. Here are the answers to the most commonly asked questions. We hope this helps!

1. How is Sole Food distinctive from other shoe retailers?

Sole Food stands out from the rest of the shoe world in many ways. Sole Food is locally and privately owned, allowing us to offer personalized service to our customers. Our wide-ranged selection of shoes for men, women, and children makes it easy for everyone to find that perfect shoe. We also carry many unique brands and styles. Cydwoq (handmade in California) and Gidigio (a small Italian company) are two brands we carry that are not commonly found in the Seattle area.

2. What is Sole Food’s return policy?

Sole Food makes it easy for customers to try out our product risk free. We offer 30 days for a full refund on any purchase. After the 30 days we are still happy to issue store credit, which never expires. We simply that the shoes be brought back in brand new condition with the original box and sales receipt.

3. Did your store get bigger?

Yes, I promise you’re not going crazy! We recently expanded our store’s front room and store room. And you know what that means… more room for more shoes!

4. When will you be having a sale?

We currently have a small women’s’ sale section for 30% off select styles. Coming up April 7-11 is our Soles 4 Souls promotion. Receive 20% off one pair of regularly priced shoes when you donate a pair of gently worn shoes to help someone in need. This year, your donation will help benefit victims of the recent earthquake in Japan.

Also, get ready! Sole Food will be participating in the Village annual sidewalk sale, scheduled for June 16-19. This sale will be big! You won’t want to miss it!

5. Do you carry shoes for wide or narrow feet?

Yes. We carry multiple brands that work well for wide and narrow feet. Some brands that typically run wide are Keen, Merrell, and Jambu. Certain styles within Cydwoq and El Naturalista may also work well with wide feet. Miz Mooz shoes often have wide toe boxes. Brands that tend to run more on the narrow side are Camper, Biviel, and Tsubo. We will work with you to find that perfect fit!

6. Can you special order a shoe in another size or color?

Maybe. If you would like a specific shoe in a size or color we do not have available, you are welcome to contact our buyer, Annie. She will be happy to contact the shoe company to see if a special order may be possible. Special orders of styles and colors not carried in the store will be treated as a final sale. Send your requests to annie@shopsolefood.com. Please include the name and style number of the shoe.

7. What’s my European shoe size?

Here are the conversion tables for European sizing. Please remember that sizing varies among different brands and styles. These conversions should be used as a starting off point when sizing.

FNPlatform: the Shoe Show at Magic

Annie here, and I have just completed my buying for the Fall/Winter 2011 season. I must say, it’s looking just as good if not better than 2010!

What’s nice about heading to a huge show like Platform is that I get to look for new styles that are fresh in my mind from the Fall 2010 season. As one of only two buyers for Sole Food, Platform is a marathon! We buy for women, men and children at this show and with the show being so huge, Karla, the owner, and I have to divide and conquer to make sure every style, brand, accessory is covered.

With a LARGE cup of coffee in our hands and lots of candy and chocolate to munch on until dinner, Karla and I meet brand after brand, walking every aisle in the hunt for new styles and trends. The best part of our trip is finding that magical brand or style that will fill a space in our customer's closet!

When we find what we want, I take a seat at the table, sit my large, heavy bag down and spread out my travel-sized office (my camera, pen, calculator, white out, and paperclips). Karla and I get to work deciding on our collection, choosing color swatches and scheduling out deliveries.

Gidigio

Here is Karla working with Kevin and Giorgio at the Gidigio booth. Gidigio has quickly become one of our favorite lines! During our Fall 2010 season, I was shocked at how fast we sold out of sizes. Gidigio's choice of colors and sense of fashion are amazing; you will see every type of boot imaginable from these guys. They really know how to keep a shoe creative without being too over the top!

Biggest trends that I saw for women were:

Lace, Lace, Lace-Ups! Tall lace knee-hi boots, ankle lace-up heels, flat oxfords…lace is everywhere next season…don’t worry the really tall boots from us will always have a side zip! (Pictured above is Indigo's Water Row bootie heel, which will be back next fall!)

Grey anyone? Grey heels, flats, boots…you name it. Remember the boot you loved in black this past season? Well it’s probably getting made in a grey option next season!

Riding boots are not going anywhere! There are a ton of riding boots from everyone now. Miz Mooz has some great styles; Frye will have their amazing riding boots except now in COLOR! I saw red, grey, distressed black or brown leathers (I could go on and on…just be ready for some Frye boots with a kick!) And remember Camper’s 1912 collection? They are back with more colors too!

At the end of the show, we were exhausted. We walked miles and miles viewing every style, and we are pleased with what we saw. There is something for everyone from our selection. We focused on fashion with comfort, specific closures, requested rubber bottoms if possible, and stick to heels that are realistic for our customers to wear all day. As always, we want fashion without having to sacrifice comfort. We need to keep our feet healthy…for sandal season :)

Here at Sole Food, we’re always on the lookout for cool new shoes and styles to add to our collection. One of our new lines this season is Sorel. If you know the name, you might be thinking of the big snow boots they’re famous for. As a very happy owner of a pair of those boots, I can tell you that Sorel is fantastic! Their footwear is incredibly comfortable, durable, and still pretty darn cute.

Now that spring is here, you probably won’t need any snow boots. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered with spring sneaker styles from Sorel that combine the comfort and durability of the classic Sorel boots. This waxed canvas high-top looks great on! The Sentry is based on Sorel’s top selling boot from the 1960’s, updated for today. The vulcanized rubber outsole provides plenty of grip for wet Seattle streets and sidewalks, while the removable insole allows you to put your own orthotic for perfect comfort.

After trying these sneakers on, I can safely say they are one of the most comfortable pairs I have ever tried on. The full-grain leather uppers and liner are so soft. These shoes are also nice and roomy in the toe box, giving plenty of room to wiggle your toes! The Sentry sneaker also has a removable insole like the high-top.

The Sentry for men has really cool distressed leather that adds a great vintage touch. They even come with an extra pair of contrast laces if you want to switch it up a bit. Again, a removable insole is also included.

Sole Knowledge: Hunter Care

If you own a pair of Hunter wellies, you maybe have already experienced a funny phenomenon with your boots. Have you started seeing this white film buildup? Don't worry; it's not tartar or plaque...and it's not a defect either. Your Hunters are doing what it's supposed to do; protecting itself from drying out and cracking. This white waxy buildup is a natural occurrence and does not affect the performance of your boots. However, if you do not like the look of it, you can take a few measures to make your boots look shiny new.

1. Soap & Water.
The simplest way to clean your boots is using cold, soapy water, and a little elbow grease. After each wear, wipe off excess dirt with a cloth, clean with soapy water, wipe, and let them sit to air dry.

2. Hunter Care Products
If you're like me, you never clean your boots off when they immediately get dirty. If you need something quicker than soap and water, try using Hunter's care products. Sole Food carries the boot spray, which works to clean off buildup, condition the rubber and bring back the shine. For quick touchups, the boot sponge works wonders.

It's that time of the year again and love is in the air. Heart shaped candy boxes, over stuffed teddy bears, and deliciously sappy cards fill store shelves. If you're like me, a procrastinator, you probably have seen all of the warning signs (of this day that happens to occur every year at the same time) but still has not bought a gift or thought of an outfit to wear on your annual date. Well if that's you and you need some style advice I assure you, one LBD (that's an initialism for 'little black dress') and some hot/cute red shoes will do the trick.

Our lovely Mandy is modeling the Lara shoe from our new Chie Mahara Spring collection. Add some retro style to any outfit with this super cute heel.

Sole Foodies' Shoe Closets

Do you ever wonder just how many pairs of shoes a person at a shoe store owns? Lots of people ask me how many pairs I own and it's come to the point where I honestly can't give them a number. That's not necessarily a bad thing! :D

I asked my fellow Sole Foodies to take pictures of their shoe collections, big and small. I also asked them to point out their favorite pair.

Amanda is a shoe fanatic, as you can tell by her photos! She's got shoes in boxes, stuffed in shoe shelves and even a small collection at her parents' house. Amanda's favorite pair is her Frye Simone Cuff boots (above), which she scored at the Sole Food sidewalk sale. Beautiful, aren't they?
Cute shoes Jen! Included in her collection are the ever-so-popular Opportunity heels from Gentle Souls. They are hot shoes!

The NYT shows off some leg!

The other day, my brother-in-law sent me this great article from the New York Times. Bill Cunningham, a photographer for the NYT, walks the streets of the Big Apple and looks at the latest and greatest fashion trends of today. Bill says the look that is dominating the streets of NYC is the "long stretch of leg, ankle boots and a new posture." Yowza!

Lindsay here, and I just wanted to take a little time to explain all about Sole Food and how we operate. We’re a small business with a boutique atmosphere (and a lot of heart!). We love shoes, and we do our best to choose fun, comfortable, colorful styles that you just won’t find anywhere else. Each season’s collection is carefully selected by our staff to be unique.

Because of this, we have small quantities of the styles we carry-usually one or two in each size. This just means that the shoes you get from Sole Food are more special! You’re unlikely to find someone walking down the street with the same shoes. It also means that if you find a great pair here, don’t wait! If you come back a week or two later, your perfect pair is likely to be gone. We have a thirty day refund policy on unworn (full price) merchandise, so you can take a pair home, wear them around the house, and try them on with different outfits to make sure they’re right for you. If not, bring them back for a full refund. Here at Sole Food, we want to make sure you LOVE your shoes!

Behind the Scenes!

We are well on our way! Construction is going very smoothly, and if you have visited the store this week, you've seen the impacts. Our temporarily smaller store is a bit cozy, and the dust is slowly collecting in the small corners and on some shoes, like this poor boot (above). I will fight the battle of the dust until I win!

It all started last night with the first step; we now have a temporary east wall located a few feet in from the original, making the store a little narrower, for now.

Wow wow wow. Sole Food has been busy helping people find gifts for this holiday season. Here's some news about what's been happening!

This past weekend we had our annual Smartwool promo, buy 3 pairs get a 4th pair free! This year we gave away well over 80 pairs of free Smartwool socks...these socks flew out the door! Don't worry, we still have a lot of Smartwool to choose from, but I wouldn't hesitate. :)

Other popular items this season include UGG slippers & boots, and Hunter rain boots. It looks like people want to stay cozy inside their home and dry outside in the rain. :D

The UGG Bailey Button boot is featured here in Atlantic, a dark blue-green color. This is available in children sizes. Soft sheep shearling will keep toes warm! I took this photo awhile back after Seattle's first snowstorm...we still have a few sizes left!

Two little girls came in and tried on some STONZ booties with the extra Sherpa liner. They loved them, and they are awfully cute! These soft booties provide great flexibility, and the elastic straps adjust for a custom fit. We have a lot of styles to choose from!

Hey there Sole Foodies,
It's Linda again, and I have a serious problem. (Ok, maybe not that serious.) I cannot stop thinking about Fluevogs! Ever since Sole Food started carrying more styles from John Fluevog last winter, I have been smitten. These shoes make a big statement! While some artists use canvas, photography or sculpture to express their art, John uses shoes:

“I’m an armchair philosopher, and artist and a style monger, my shoes and messages are quite simply a part of me.”

I like to think that I am a "Fluevoger," with my BBC Radio boots. I can't count how many times I have received compliments from these boots and was so glad to help out some ladies in the store with a pair of the same ones last weekend. I wear these with everything and even commute on my bike with them.

New styles just arrived...

The CBC Radio shoe, in an awesome plaid pattern (available for men only.). And guess what? These shoes are VEGAN. Not into the pattern? We also have CBC Radio shoes in black, brown, and even green leathers. A true Fluevog classic.

The BBC boots (just like my brown ones above) are a great compliment to any outfit. For men and woman both, this boot comes in brown, black and burgundy.

One of my new favorites, the Promise shoe is a fun shoe. It has a small heel, layered leathers and a stamped pattern on the main part of the shoe. I would definitely wear these with black tights and my dresses.

Also part of the Radio series, the RCI boot for men is ready to slip on and go. It is seen here in charcoal gray.

We love this time of the year. The leaves are golden, the air is crisp, and the pumpkin pies are delicious! Here’s a quick update on what we’ve been doing this October.

Trick or Treat!

Every year at Sole Food, our team participates in the annual Trick or Treating festivities. We get to see the cutest (and scariest) costumes out there: from storybook princesses to chilling goblins. To prove that we’re in the Halloween spirit, our store always participates in dressing up, this year we’re pieces from the game “Clue.” Our sister store, Kid's Club, dressed up as characters from Toy Story!

Spina Bifida

Sole Food and Kids Club has teamed up with the Spina Bifida Association to help raise money for those affected with this birth defect. October is National Spina Bifida Awareness Month. Spina Bifida occurs when the spinal cord doesn’t grow the way it should and thus protrudes outside the body, leading to complications such as paralysis, learning problems, and problems with bladder and bowel control. An estimate of 166,000 people in the United States lives with Spina Bifida. To do our part, Sole Food and Kids Club has sold “Ghosts” for a dollar each. 100% of the donation goes to the Spina Bifida Association, and as of right now our combined pull from both of our stores has raked in over $1500 dollars! Thank you so much for your donations and your support.

Whether you love the darker days or not, make sure you're prepared for whatever the weather will throw at you...and you know it could be anything! Hunter Boot Ltd. have been the preferred welly boot of Scotland and Europe since its inception in 1856. Lindsay here, and I just wanted to tell everyone a little bit about one of my favorite lines at Sole Food, Miz Mooz! Miz Mooz is fairly new to the shoe world, and started with humble beginnings in 2001 in an office basement. Although they’ve grown and expanded a bit since then, the team behind Miz Mooz remains “committed to the principle that fashion and comfort can happily coexist.” These are fun shoes that will make you stand out from the crowd, but your feet will still be happy!

Miz Mooz shoes are designed by a small team in New York. Their concept is sent to Italy, where a last (kind of like the skeleton for the shoe) is designed. Then, the shoes are handcrafted with the highest quality leathers and materials. Finally, the finished product ends up in our store, and hopefully your closet!

Soles4Souls: Changing the World One Pair at a Time

Hey Sole Food lovers,

Linda here and I have just returned from a month long trip away. It feels good to be back in Seattle and at Sole Food again! What a huge difference four weeks makes in a small boutique like Sole Food. I did not recognize the store! It was quite overwhelming to see so many new shoes and a bunch of new accessories for fall. I am very excited to add new findings to my fall collection. After all, Autumn is my favorite season of all time. It is a perfect time to play with your wardrobe, especially with the dynamic changes in the weather that Seattle sees during this time.

I wanted to share just a smidgen of what's new in the store, especially those that first caught my

eye when I first got back.

I know what else you might be thinking. "I can't wear boots. My calves are too big."

This is a negative that is found in some boots...not enough versatility in the shaft widths so that the boots can fit a number of different leg sizes.

Arch Support: To have or have not?

Sole Food mamas and papas are caring individuals who only want the best for their wee ones. One of the main concerns parents have is whether or not children should have arch support in their shoes. Well, to help clear the air, this post will focus on arch support for your children.

Infants and Toddlers:
Babies are the cutest things! They are born with flat feet and do not need arch supports. They generally have flat chubby feet with a padding of protective fat underneath the foot to help protect their malleable feet. At this stage the best shoe for their feet needs to be soft, not too restricting, and made of natural leather or canvas. Synthetic materials don't allow feet to breathe properly and at this stage children usually produce up to 2 pints of liquid each day (that's some sweaty feet!). The appearance of the flat foot starts disappearing as children start walking around and improving their gait.

Children ages 4 and up:
A normal arch tends to develop between the ages of 4 through 8. The muscles and ligaments develop naturally and longitudinal arch becomes present. Only a Podiatrist can diagnose a rigid flat foot or a pronounced longitudinal arch, so if your child does not develop an arch during this time period, it is advisable to see a doctor to avoid foot problems later in life.

If your child tends to pronate, or to roll their foot inwards, you may need shoes with some arch support. This will help the foot turn out promote appropriate foot, leg, and back alignment. Here at Sole Food we carry many childrens brands that have great support. We also carry brands that have removable insolves, such as Keen, Merrell, and Ecco, if your child has custom or ready made arch supports that need to be inserted in their shoes.

Sole Food is excited to carry a new line of designer shoes for women. You may have seen them in the store earlier this spring, but if you haven't seen or tried them on, you should!

Chie Mihara is a world-class designer, born in Brazil, studied design in Japan, and now lives in Europe creating beautiful shoes. She launched her shoe line in Elda, Spain in 2002 with the goals of designing footwear that is feminine and attractive, without giving up comfort.

Orthotic-Friendly Shoes for Summer!

Summer is almost here in Seattle! Summer starts June 21 and that means warm weather and sunny skies in Seattle. The socks come off and the sandals and open shoes come in.

If you're an orthotic-wearer, you may have found it difficult to find summer-friendly shoes for your feet helpers. Here are some great styles that Sole Food carries that work well with orthodics.

Men's Styles
Camper Brothers Slip-On...features a removable footbed and soft leathers-very comfortable for a day out.

Keen Coronado Slip-On...seen here in a light grey canvas, the Coronado is a Keen classic. With a removable footbed and supportive sole, the Coronado also has a wider toe bed, which is great for those who need that extra wiggle room.

Creative Recreation

Bold sneakers are back! Creative Recreation is a line of shoes you'll see standing out on our walls. These kicks show off with bold color combinations, classic sneaker lines and just pure fun style!

"Creative Recreation: characterized by originality and imagination, a refreshment of one's mind and body through activity that amuses and stimulates play."

I have met a few persons coming into our store looking for these C-Recs. My brother, who always knows what's "hip", tells me that these shoes are hot. They do look it! For men, we have many many styles and lots of great ones that fill the void between dress shoes and athletic wear.

Ponti V High Top (sizes 8-13): This is a nice, lightweight high top made with textiles instead of leather. It looks great with dark denim jeans or cargo shorts. The Ponti speaks organic, summer and comfort.

Dicoco Lo Shoe (sizes 8-13): The Dicoco line is one of C-Rec's classic lines. This spin on the wing-tip shoe will sure to catch the eye. Brown, tan and blue? Who knew that combo could look so good?

Cesario Lo Shoe (sizes 7-13): Another classic from Creative Recreation. You can't go wrong with black and white! The materiality of this shoe is refreshingly unique, with various textile uppers and great textures.

Creative Recreation, born out of Orange County, California, is recognized around the world and worn by many personalities, including young Hollywood stars and professional athletes. Their designers travel the world and draw inspiration from countries such as Egypt and Italy.

Not only do we have styles for men, but for women and children too!
